What a finish in Omaha! What a College World Series!  However, the aftermath has put a small black eye on college athletics.   Congratulations to the Tennessee Volunteers and the entire coaching staff as they won their 1st Natty.  They’ve been the best program in the sport the last five years and finally dotted the I and crossed the T’s to get across the finish line.  Hours after ESPN went off the air, the entire landscape in college baseball changed in a flash.   The departure from A & M to archrival Texas by Coach Schloss and his entire staff has the college baseball world saying WTF.  Being a father of a son who aspires of playing D1 baseball, I don’t know what to think or say to him.  Everyone has the right to pursue their own dreams and jobs, but something just doesn’t feel right here.   College baseball faces challenges related to the limited number of scholarships available under NCAA rules, particularly the restriction of 11.7 scholarships for the entire roster. This rule
The End of an Era!   As July 1st approaches, college sports as we know it, will quietly shift away from the traditions that we've known for decades.  Frankly, I don't like it!  Being a former Big 10 football player at the University of Illinois, our goal every year was to win the Big 10 and qualify for the Rose Bowl.  Once that goal was achieved, we'd be slated against a PAC 12 opponent and hope to bring back the Rose Bowl Title to the Midwest.   Now we have Oregon, Washington, UCLA and USC joining the league and will have cross country travel to play these football games and all the other sports.  I am one that still can't stomach Nebraska being in the Big 10, so to have these 4 join the BIG 10 and the teams from the PAC 12 joining the BIG 12/ACC or if you're WSU or Oregon State being left in the abyss.  The question I ask is why?  The answer is $$$$!  Coach Chip Kelly who left his HC position at UCLA to move to Ohio State to be the offensive coordinator (Which is

Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? I have been struggling all week to put down into words on how this country is at a crossroads for its soul and how I can relate it to my first love sports.  This blog isn't about red or blue and who's right or wrong, it’s about getting back to the days of civility.  I have friends that fill both sides of the so-called aisle and the reason they are friends, and might I say dear friends is that their political beliefs don't define who they're as a person.   I think back to my childhood growing up in the Chicago suburbs and the midwestern values my mom and dad preached and how they've impacted my life.  Those were the days and times when my brother and I left the house at the crack of dawn with our bikes, baseball gloves and ball, and a football.  (For the youth of today, no phones or video games.) We'd play with our neighborhood friends all day until mom rang the dinner bell and we would come home and sit down around the dinner ta
2024 PGA Championship  The aftermath and what might have been! As the dust settles after the 2024 PGA Championship, it appears that epic failure may have occurred, and in the midst may have robbed the golf fans of a truly special summer.  When all the officials made appearances today in Louisville and released the specifics on the case that involves world number one Scottie Scheffler, the video released told a different story than what was released during the event.   In my experience having worked a PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and 4 Charles Schwab Cups, the time and effort that’s put in to coordinate player parking, traffic control, State Police, County Sheriffs, and local PD and volunteers to execute the event takes countless hours of planning and execution.  After watching the videos released today, considering the rain and the tragic death of a beloved volunteer, it appears that the police officer clearly overreacted.  There appears to be no dragging and Scottie was proceeding at a

Mike Scully Golf/Football  Hatten Twins Chasing Their Dreams! It’s been 36 years since I signed a free agent contract with defending Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins. It was a dream of mine since I was a little boy to play professional football. I relish in the fact that I was able to fulfill that dream, even though it didn’t last as long as I would have liked. Injuries and a faithful Monday night in the Meadowlands against Bill Parcells and his Giants, and that’s all I need to say as it took a decade or more to clear my head of that night.  Enough about me! I have the privilege to share a story about two outstanding young men, Hogan & Hayden Hatten. In full disclosure I’ve know these boys since they were 10 years old. They played every sport they could and where on my oldest son Peyton’s travel baseball team. I knew at 10 years old that these two were special. They had a competitive spirit that was unlike any of the other kids we were around. They were a great influence o
Mike Scully on the 2024 PGA Championship Looking forward to the Scottie Scheffler Open later this week!  Trying to weed through all the history that Valhalla has gathered in a relatively short time for a golf club that hosts Major Championships, Ryder Cups, etc.  Tiger Woods validated the course with his shootout with Bob May in 2000 after their maiden voyage and tour veteran Mark Brooks in 1996.  Rory made great work of Valhalla sprinting to the finish to avoid a lightning strike in 2014 and returns in great form.   As a former member of the PGA of America, there were many times I didn't agree with their leadership and how it impacted us a club professionals.  However, their move to invite LIV Golfers this week and try to extend somewhat of an olive branch maybe the smartest thing they have done in years.  With the resigning of one of golf's true gentlemen Jimmy Dunne from the PGA Tour Advisory Board on Monday, professional golf is searching for a way to recover and find a way
